EARLY POWER-AMP KICK.ARTICULATE AND SUSTAINED CLEAN TONE.HARMONICALLY RICH AND ROUNDED, SINGING OVERDRIVE.

At the heart of Royaltone lies a clear, detailed, and harmonically rich sound, delivering a beautifully balanced tone.

Royaltone's secret is that the power and preamp sections are always “in touch,” even at low volume settings. When your guitar signal hits the power section early, it results in greater sustain and harmonic richness, letting you enjoy every note you play. Because of this characteristic, Royaltone brings out every detail and nuance in the notes you play, resulting in a better listening experience for the audience as well.

The overdrive channel organically engages with your playing and touch. Even at high gain, the response remains firmly under your control. It still follows your touch quickly and dynamically, without changing the tonal identity established in the preamp.

VOLUME, OVERDRIVE, AND BOOST

THREE CONTROLS. A COMPLETE GAIN STRUCTURE.

The character of Royaltone’s overdrive channel is shaped by the interaction between the Volume, Overdrive, and Boost controls.

CLEAN CHANNEL

Royaltone’s clean channel combines American-style openness with the harmonic depth, piano-like note definition, sustain, and three-dimensional response associated with refined boutique amplifiers.

Its sensitive input allows the clean tone to move naturally from clean headroom into an early power-amp kick and edge-of-breakup response. The transition is gradual and musical: lighter playing remains articulate, while a stronger attack introduces warmth, harmonic movement, and controlled tube compression.

The result is a sustained clean voice that feels full without becoming static or losing sensitivity to your touch. It also provides a highly responsive foundation for pedals while preserving the individual character of different guitars and pickup types.

OVERDRIVE CHANNEL

A ROUNDED VOICE WITH ITS OWN HARMONIC SIGNATURE.

Royaltone’s overdrive channel was developed around a carefully selected harmonic balance. The circuit was carefully voiced to suppress unwanted, abrasive overtones, leaving a warm, rounded overdrive voice that works equally well with single-coil and humbucking pickups.

The harmonic structure remains complex without becoming harsh, congested, or excessively compressed. Even as the gain rises, pick definition, the ability to clean up from the guitar’s volume control, and the fundamental character of the instrument remain intact.

The circuit layout was also optimized for exceptionally low noise and stable operation, helping Royaltone remain composed in real-world home, studio, and stage environments.

WARM. ROUNDED. RESPONSIVE.

VOLUME

The Volume control sets the level of the clean channel while also determining how strongly the signal drives the overdrive section. Raising the Volume increases the signal level feeding the overdrive circuit, directly influencing its gain structure and response.

OVERDRIVE

Controls the amount of additional gain and saturation produced by the overdrive channel. Lower settings introduce light breakup and dynamic crunch, while higher settings create a denser, rounder voice with greater harmonic complexity and sustain.

BOOST

Sets the output level of the overdrive channel. Use it to balance the clean and overdrive levels, or to create a deliberate volume increase when switching to the overdrive channel for lead playing.

Because the clean and overdrive sections are closely connected, the EQ and clean-channel foundation you establish continue to shape the character of the overdrive channel.

ONE EQ FOR BOTH CHANNELS

CHANGE THE GAIN. KEEP YOUR TONAL FOUNDATION.

The clean and overdrive channels share the same Treble, Middle, Bass, Presence, and Mid-Range controls.

Switching from clean to overdrive does not replace your EQ with an unrelated channel voice. The frequency balance established on the clean channel remains the tonal foundation of the overdrive sound.

The EQ foundation remains unchanged, while the Overdrive and Boost controls determine the gain structure and output level of the overdrive channel. Channel switching is immediate, with no audible interruption or distracting switching noise.

SHAPE THE COMPLETE AMPLIFIER.

TREBLE

Controls the upper-frequency content while revealing pick detail, openness, and upper harmonics.

A carefully selected silver mica capacitor helps the Treble response remain refined and musical. This helps avoid a raw or abrasive top end while producing a clear, defined treble range that sits naturally within the sound of the guitar.

Its interaction with the Middle control also allows the upper-mid harmonic structure to be shaped with precision.

MIDDLE

Controls the core midrange voice of both channels.

Lower settings help create broader, more American-style clean tones. Higher settings move the amplifier toward a more vocal, forward, and British-leaning response.

BASS

Provides a broad and useful low-frequency range.

Raise it for greater depth and body, or reduce it to keep the response tight and controlled at higher gain settings. Its wide adjustment range allows Royaltone to adapt to different guitars, pickups, rooms, and playing styles.

PRESENCE

Shapes the upper-frequency response of the power amplifier.

Higher settings produce a more open and immediate response with a distinct British chime. Lower settings soften the power-stage attack without reducing the usefulness of the main Treble control.

MID-RANGE

Provides the final adjustment to the amplifier’s upper-mid response and becomes particularly effective when the power stage is being driven at higher levels.

Turn it counterclockwise to reduce high-mid content and create a more scooped response. At its fully clockwise position, the control becomes effectively neutral, leaving the natural midrange established by the Treble, Middle, and Bass network essentially unaffected.

This makes Mid-Range a highly effective final adjustment for matching the amplifier to a musical style, guitar, stage, or recording environment.

TREBLE & MID RESPONSE

FAT

Engage the Fat switch to add fullness, weight, and body. It is particularly useful when a guitar, pickup, or playing situation calls for a broader and more substantial response.

BRIGHT / NONE / TIGHT

The three-position voicing switch adjusts the amplifier’s treble response to suit different playing styles and pickup types. Tight is brighter than None, while Bright provides the strongest treble emphasis.

BRIGHT

Provides the greatest increase in treble response for maximum brightness, openness, and upper-frequency detail.

NONE

Leaves the voicing neutral, allowing Royaltone’s natural frequency balance to come through unchanged.

TIGHT

Increases the treble response for greater clarity, definition, and presence without reaching the stronger emphasis of the Bright setting.

MASTER VOLUME

Royaltone uses a Lar-Mar Post Phase Inverter Master Volume design.

With the Master control fully open, it has minimal influence on the circuit, allowing the amplifier to operate with its natural full-power response.

Turning it down reduces the signal reaching the power tubes and controls the final volume of both the clean and overdrive channels. This allows the overall level to be reduced while preserving much of the amplifier’s frequency balance, harmonic character, and touch-sensitive response.

HALF WATT MODE

DRIVE THE POWER STAGE. CONTROL THE ROOM.

The front-panel Half Watt switch reduces the power delivered to the speaker, allowing the power stage to be driven harder at a lower overall output level.

With 6V6 power tubes, output is reduced from 22 watts to approximately 11 watts. With EL34 tubes, output is reduced from approximately 30–35 watts to approximately 15–17.5 watts.

The Half Watt circuit is designed to remain highly transparent. Because it lowers the available headroom, stronger power-stage compression and saturation may become more noticeable when the amplifier is driven.

Used together, Half Watt mode and the Master Volume provide a wide and practical range of volume control for recording, rehearsals, smaller stages, and home use.

CHOOSE YOUR POWER TUBES

TWO POWER-TUBE VOICES. ONE ROYALTONE IDENTITY.

Royaltone can be ordered with a matched pair of JJ 6V6 or JJ EL34 power tubes. The amplifier is delivered fully tested and correctly biased for the selected tube type.

6V6 — 22 WATTS

Lower headroom, earlier power-stage compression, and a softer transition into breakup.

The response leans toward an American-style character, with a rounded attack and a more relaxed feel when the power section is pushed.

EL34 — APPROXIMATELY 30–35 WATTS

Greater headroom, a firmer low-frequency response, and a more immediate, open presentation.

Its slightly more forward upper-mid character gives the amplifier a subtle British emphasis and a broader, more expansive sense of scale.

Whichever power-tube configuration you choose, Royaltone’s essential clean and overdrive identity remains intact.

ALL-JJ TUBE COMPLEMENT

CONSISTENCY FROM THE FIRST GAIN STAGE TO THE POWER SECTION.

BUFFERED FX LOOP

MIX YOUR EFFECTS. KEEP YOUR CORE TONE.

Royaltone features a highly transparent buffered FX loop developed specifically for the amplifier.

Its Send and Return connections support standard guitar pedals as well as line-level rack effects. Delays, chorus pedals, modulation effects, and other processors can therefore be integrated while preserving the amplifier’s core tone and gain character.

SERIAL MODE

Places the connected effect directly in the signal path for conventional FX-loop operation.

PARALLEL MODE

Preserves the amplifier’s dry signal while blending in the processed signal. In Parallel mode, the Return control adjusts the level of the processed signal blended with the dry signal.

The loop uses internally normalled jacks, so no patch cable is required when nothing is connected. With no external effect attached, the Send and Return controls can also be used to create a footswitchable increase in overall volume.

FX-loop switching is designed to operate with no audible interruption or distracting switching noise.

Royaltone two-button footswitch

FOOTSWITCHABLE CONTROL

TWO SWITCHES. COMPLETE FOOT CONTROL.

The supplied two-button footswitch controls:

CLEAN / OVERDRIVE
— Channel selection
FX LOOP ON / OFF
— FX Loop switching

Both functions are designed to switch with no audible interruption or distracting switching noise.

The footswitch is included with the amplifier. The connection cable is not included. A standard 6.35 mm TRS-to-TRS stereo cable is required.

BIAS AND POWER-TUBE SERVICE

DESIGNED FOR PROFESSIONAL SERVICING.

Rear-panel bias test points and an externally accessible bias-adjustment shaft allow the amplifier to be measured and adjusted without opening the chassis.

These facilities are intended exclusively for qualified technicians. Tube amplifiers contain potentially lethal voltages, even after they have been switched off.

Changing between 6V6 and EL34 power tubes requires the bias to be checked and correctly adjusted. Power-tube replacement, measurement, and bias adjustment must therefore be performed by an experienced and qualified amplifier technician.

Merlin Musical Electronics provides bias and tube-service support for Merlin amplifiers. Damage or malfunction resulting from incorrect tube installation, improper bias adjustment, or unauthorized servicing is not covered by the warranty.
